Tale #2: The Peace Corps.

Hello, Welcome back!

My sophomore year of high school, I had an English teacher who asked me what I wanted to do after high school, I told him I wanted to travel to which he replied "join the Peace Corps they go out to different countries and you get to help people". Since that conversation, I always made sure to keep that option open, amongst the many goals I need to accomplish, doing at least one program in the Peace Corps was/has always been an option. I have always wanted to travel the world, meet new people, and be able to explore new cultures. Although, this is something I cannot do right now due to school and  our current situation this is something I want to accomplish after I graduate.

One of the main reasons I decided that becoming a volunteer and joining the peace corps would be an option for me is because it has always been a dream of mine to help out people while learning more about other cultures. I believe that it would be a way to push me out of my comfort zone while forcing myself to explore new characteristics in addition to aspects of myself that I was unaware of. I hope to meet new people that hopefully become new friends that I can go back to and visit when the program is over.

A program I would be interested in doing is Water, Sanitation and Hygiene Education. This educational program helps out the community by teaching the young children about HIV/AIDS and how to prevent the spread. As a volunteer, you are expected to communicate with one another on nutritional foods while guiding them on the ways they can achieve having clean safe water. When I clicked on this program, I was fascinated on the many ways you can improve their living situation and how you can help the young children who are in difficult circumstances. I liked how it was not just reduced to one goal it had many goals on how you can impact everyone’s lives from helping them find sustainable ways to use their natural resources to empowering them to demand change. A requirement for this program is speak Spanish, have a degree in arts or science, or have five years' of work experience.  If I could choose the place to go to along with what I want to teach it would be Asia and teaching English because it would require me to learn a new language. I feel like it will allow my students and I to be vulnerable with one another due to us both learning new things and being able to laugh off our pronunciation mistakes.

There is a variety of programs that you can choose from, each program has an assigned location for example; if you want to teach health (you would click on the health section) and it would give you a location with an estimated departure time. I like that they offer you options, and provide you with background information on what is expected of you along with what you will be doing. When applying to become a volunteer you have to be a u.s. citizen and be at least eighteen years old. You have to take specific classes depending on where you are going in addition to that you have to take safety and wellness classes. You have to be able to adapt well to your environment and know how to solve problems on the spot. A location I am not that interested in would be Mexico because I have already been there, I would want to see a country I haven't been able to see like Fiji.

For the variety of options, I want to join this program, I hope you enjoyed reading and learning about why I want to join the Peace Corps.

  1. Wow! Volunteering somewhere that speaks a different language and immersing yourself into their culture is very inspiring. I had no idea there were so many options available based on what you would be doing. This is very informative and something I will be sharing with others. A great way to build skills and relationships. I enjoyed reading your post but the font size did make it a little difficult to follow especially when it gets much smaller with the third paragraph.

  2. This was a great read, and was very informative! I didn't know all that the Peace Corps entailed so it was interesting to read a little more on it and see what it's about. I've volunteered a few times though at nothing to the extent of which you aim to do, and that's inspiring to see! I actually was set up to volunteer as a veterinary assistant in Belize, but it was senior program for my veterinary school and I was 9 days shy of being 18, I hope to one day visit Belize though even if it's not to volunteer. I also hope you are able to accomplish your Peace Corps goal as well, good luck!
