Tale #10: Our Lab Pets

Image
Hello and welcome back,  When watching the films "Food inc and Fresh," I got a more in-depth explanation of industrialized farming. It got me thinking we are so busy talking about what goes inside our bodies but not what we put on the outside. Eventually, I drew up a conclusion of researching animal testing.  I found out how many products, companies, and the millions of ways society mindlessly dismisses this topic. It made me upset, uncomfortable, and disappointed. I had unknowingly contributed to this ongoing problem by not educating myself.  Animal testing was "needed" to help prevent allergic reactions in specific products. The issue with this concept is that not all animals are biologically the same. Animals and humans will react differently to different things. For example, Jessica Alba created "the honest company" because she would have allergic reactions to popular products. So, why would people and animals be any different? After seeing this short ...

Tale #9: 1950's diet culture.

Image
Hello and welcome back, The 1950s was a revolutionary moment for people. World War II had ended, and America's economy was in recovery. The push for Americans to constantly spend money was widely encouraged. It resulted in everything changing from simple fashion changes to an entirely new way of working out. This new concept ultimately created the boom of the  slim figure .  When Marylin Monroe and Liz Taylor's tiny waists hit the screens, this ideal body type became the most desirable. When woman's fashion began to change so, did the idealism of how women should look. In the 50s, the rise of fat-shaming became popular again due to dieting coming back into style. From a cracker company advertising "no one loves a fat girl." to a book titled "The Fat Boy's Book: How Elmer lost 40 pounds in 80 days." no man or woman was safe from this harsh reality.  This new outlook took the food industry by storm, which resulted in promoting sugary foods that would...

Tale #Ec: Food.inc

Image
Hello, Welcome Back. I was shocked, upset, and disappointed because these major companies would prefer to expose people to harmful chemicals and degrade them in their jobs. I was upset because no matter what you consume, you are contributing to this toxic food process. Major companies have created such a polished system that many do not even know they're contributing to it.  Sadly, I was not surprised by the images because these companies have created a "cheap system" that has changed the way we eat food. The disappointment came from seeing people trapped in this unpleasant environment.  I was disappointed to find out that this system is institutionalized to prevent change from happening. The relationship the government has with these businesses is not a surprise to me. The government  protecting these businesses has become a result of them not being held accountable for the lives/protection of people. I'm angry that our government continues to promote this when ther...

Tale #8: Studying Abroad

Image
Hello and Welcome back.    When I was a junior in high school, I wanted to study abroad in a foreign country to see their culture, learn a new language and meet new people while going to college. Unfortunately, I ended up changing my plans and ended up not going. I learned a lot when trying to become a foreign exchange student from knowing how much money is needed and all the shots/vaccines you must have before you go. Whether or not learning their native language is a requirement and how long you have to study the language before you are able to go. Although becoming an exchange student may seem extremely stressful and scary, the endless possibilities definitely outweigh those negative feelings.  When deciding on traveling abroad, it is crucial to have three decisions made, where you're going to go, what you're going to study, and how long you will stay.  When looking for what would be the best way to apply I found ASF-USA   an organization that allows you to s...

Tale #7: The "FRESH"ness of our food

Image
Hello, Welcome back. For today's topic, I am going to talk about a documentary I saw called Fresh. The film is educating people who are not aware of what is happening to farmers. The purpose of the documentary was to inform their audience of the difference between industrialized and organic farming.  I found myself disheartened and concerned due to the millions of things that revolve around farming. All I knew was that they used pesticides but was not aware of those horrific incidents.  Many statements that the interviewees had said stood out to me. For instance, a farmer said that they feed cows to cows was a huge red flag because many people believe that they are fed grains. A farmer explained that there is no such thing as cheap food due to people having to keep up this illusion. Each farmer pointed out that the animals are overpopulated. Creating a substantial problem and not preventing those animals from diseases. Another farmer explained that they cut the tai...

Tale #6: We're dying...to paint our nails

Image
Hello Welcome Back,  When quarantine suddenly arrived the rise of "self care" began. Whether it was trying to find a way to cut your hair to finding the perfect technique to getting the perfect Manicure. When I finally began painting my nails I realized that I wasn't able to paint my nails without fumigating myself or being able to get rid of the terrible smell for what felt like forever.  It wasn't until I finished my favorite sparkly purple nail polish that I began to research for nail polish that wasn't as harsh. I found this website that goes in depth about the different  brands  of nail polish and the chemicals it doesn't have while providing you with links to websites where you can buy it.  While I was researching, I found this amazing nail company that has taken the initiative to create safe and friendly products. This amazing nail company is called  Kapa Nui N...

Tale #5: Beauty Blogger Gone Wrong?

Image
Hello, Welcome back.  The Advertisement that I decided to analyze was   Mayhem: Beauty Blogger . This advertisement is meant to be a satirical and comical warning about the inevitable moments that anyone can go through. This ad is supposed to make the audience feel assured that if they choose All-State Insurance that the company will have their back. This particular ad is supposed to have a one on one moment with the people watching at home by explaining that being glamorous and trying to show others how to be, can end up being one of the biggest mistakes of that person's life if they are not careful. The target audience is supposed to show parents that if their son or daughter ever tries to become a beauty blogger that they may forget to leave the straightener on or forget that it is still hot by placing it on a towel.      The context of the advertisement is that a "forgotten" heat source can be the most deadly thing that can happen to a person. Regardless of ...
